Our first turkey egg, at last!!
It feels like it has been a long wait but today we finally had our first turkey egg of the year. We are not sure which bird laid it but it is beautifully formed and delightfully speckled. The turkeys didn’t start laying that much earlier last year but as so many people we know already have eggs under mums and/or in the incubator, we felt we were way behind. We will collect the eggs for now to keep them safe and once we know who is laying, plan the next stage. We do want the turkeys themselves to hatch them but a lot will depend on numbers and who goes broody and when. Taking the eggs away won't encourage broodiness but we can use false eggs or even chicken eggs to encourage it if needs be and that way the turkey eggs themslevs will be kept safe and clean until we can safely give them to an 'expectant' mum!!
Relaxed at Home
We already have two sets of duck eggs being incubated, one under a duck and one under a chicken. The ultimate aim is to have youngsters of all four bird types for our first weekend course at the end of next month. We may be pushing it with the turkeys though…
