Time to dry off
When both sets of goat twins went to their new homes, we took one look at a very skinny Sorrel and realized that continuing to milk her in order to start making cheese was not an option. She had a great pregnancy and has raised a cracking pair of kids but she now needs time to recover. Her gut problems mean she cannot process her food as well as she should be able to and as such she does not extract all the nutrients she should. This means she needs more food but equally a lot of it is wasted as it simply passes straight through her. The vet suspects a huge worm burden as a kid probably damaged her gut and in addition, she is now probe to suffering from worms which compounds the problem.
Relaxed at Home
We are thus drying her off which means giving her less feed in order for the milk production to slow down – which of course is slightly at odds with needing to get weight on her! We are also drying off Pebbles too as we need two goats to get enough milk for cheese so Pebbles on her own won’t work! It's all a bit sad as this is now our THIRD year without cheese making...
