Settling in!
Well, introductions have gone well and (touch wood) we have eight happy rhea (the other two were just out of view). Isn’t it amazing how animals of the same species gravitate towards each other. So why? Is it sight alone, behaviour, sound??
Relaxed at Home
We have had a bit of a change around now that we have more rhea and (since last week's dispatch day) less ducks and chickens and so the geese are now back in their stall and the rhea are now in the main stable with the other birds. It’s better for the rhea as the pop hole entrance is not that tall whereas the mains stable entrance is a full door. Rounding them up tonight and guiding them in was a very slow, but calm affair. Rhea don’t really 'herd' and so we had to work hard to get them all moving together in the direction we wanted. The secret was to take our time so they didn’t get spooked and run off.
All went to plan and when we peaked in around midnight, they were all lying down together on the straw whilst all the other birds were either on or under the perches. It was delightfully calm!! We breathed a sigh of relief and slowly crept away!
