Farewell to the Good Lifers!!
Today the Good Lifers went off to their new home. We were sad to see them go but happy with our decision to just keep the Gee-Gees (Gloria, Guinevere and Sylvester, all pictured below) and then re-consider our breeding plans next year. The four remaining young boys looked a bit lost for a while but by tea time, we noticed Gloria was seriously ‘cosing’ up to them. As sibling love is not viewed in quite the same way amongst poultry as it is amongst humans, we could only conclude she was being a bit of a tart!!!
It’s a lot quieter without the adults but we expect that will change.
Relaxed at Home
We had a bit of a sort out as regards who goes where and with 25 young chicks and 9 ducklings now hatched, our goose stall has now reverted back to being the broody stall. The ducklings with Apple as mum are safe in the aviary whilst the two chickens and their chicks are in the main area. We will keep the pop hole shut for a few days and then will let the chickens out. They should be safe from danger (fingers crossed) but Apple and her family will need to stay in for a while longer as we know that up to almost three weeks, the ducklings are still vulnerable to corvids. We have now got a fruit cage to set up so we can get the duckling families outside sooner in a protected area: just need an extra day this week to get it errected!! (ha ha!!)
