The maternity wing!
Thyme’s official due date is tomorrow but we know from last year and from other cow keepers, that arriving on a due date is pretty rare. As such we only moved Thyme into the Collecting area today. The main reason for moving her, in fact the only real reason is so that Caraway won’t drink from her and take the vital colostrum needed for the newly born calf. A cow only produces this in the last few days before giving birth and so we are safe in only separating them now.
Relaxed at Home
If Caraway had been suckling to the point of making Thyme lose condition, we would have separated them before now (or taped up Thyme’s teats as we did with Sorrell last year) but Thyme has been okay. Thyme was not that phased at being taken away from the rest of the herd. Caraway was less impressed at not being with her mother though and did let us know for the rest of the day!!!
