Nervous hatching!
We are in a bit of a state of nervousness! Our next set of goose eggs, nine from an original batch of 12 (the other three weren’t fertile) are due to hatch from Thursday and we have made the decision to put them under two Indian Games broodies. Both have been broody for a while, one in fact was the bird who wouldn’t accept Gloria just under a couple of weeks ago (our fault as she really too old when we tried). Both are also ‘reliable’ broodies in that they have hatched birds before and been good mums BUT these goose eggs are obviously precious and having lost 4 birds from our first hatch, we are keen to do as well as we can in our next!!
Relaxed at Home
So we are nervous about how many may hatch; we are also nervous, in light of the rat problems we have had, about how well the broodies will look after any goslings they get. BUT if all goes well it will be brilliant because the best way for any young birds to be brought up is by ‘mums’, albeit in this case, of slightly different species!!
Fingers, toes, legs, everything is crossed!
