Our first 2018 chicks
Big excitements: we have five totally different coloured chicks with our two barn broodies AND we now have THREE chicks with our stable broody. The egg we were not sure about, has now hatched and so we have a very pretty pale brown chick with our black and stripy ones. The set of five are also all quite different, all stripy to a greater or lesser degree and all varying shades of brown and yellow. The photos shows two of them. Of that batch of eight eggs then, we now have five chicks and three eggs still remaining (dead or alive we are not sure). We will perhaps candle the eggs tomorrow and see where we are, (if we can get near them that is, these two chickens are ferocious broodies…).

It was a joy to watch mums and chicks together. A favourite sight is seeing the chicks rush back to mum and then go head down, bum up as they scurry back into the warmth of her body. A second favourite is then when a head appears between the feathers. All in all, beautiful!!! Weather wise, the day began with a bit of promise but as we type this we have heavy rain and south easterly winds. Oh joy!!!!
