And now the turkeys...
After the excitement of yesterday's fertile goose eggs, today we had our first turkey egg. We are not sure which one of our four girls laid it as we found it in a nestbox when we went to muck out. We suspect Napoleana as it is quite small and hers were small-ish last year. We will wait for to see if they become any bigger and then perhaps start to leave them in the nest in order to encourage whoever is laying them to become broody.
Photo shows her egg and 2 chicken eggs, the smallest being a bantam cross and the largest a 'large' chicken egg!

We have now set up the smaller of the two barn stores as a permanent broody area, making the larger one a full feed and medicine store! The idea is that broodies with young can spend a few days in here before being transferred to the main poultry stable. How long depends on the birds and how robust we think they might be. We also have to consider the geese. Ideally we need then to be back in the top 3-acre with the alpacas before we have any 'young' youngsters in with them.
We are also however reclaiming the wood store for the birds as David is building a big log shed on the drive. This is going to be perfect as it is quite a big space so could house two or three 'families' plus it has a pop hole out onto the poultry area so once old enough, the birds can then go in and out as they want!!!
