Saved!!
Today was poultry dispatch day!!! But this chap here was saved because last Thursday we had a call from someone wanting a Copper Maran cockerel which is what he is. Maran hens lay very dark brown eggs and so we had bought 6 eggs back in the spring in the hope of hatching a hen or two and then being able to add dark eggs to our other amazing array of colours!
Relaxed at Home
We hatched two cockerels and one hen, not a great hatch rate but at least we got one female. The second cockerel did not had the luck of his brother and tonight he is in the freezer along with six other cockerels and five ducks. As ever, it was hard to see the birds go but we now have some great meat for us and the dogs AND, more importantly, we won’t now have the problem of too many males and not enough females in the poultry paddock. What with that and selling 14 ducks on Saturday, our mucking out in the mornings is starting to get a whole lot easier.
