Goat plans!!
Continuing our 'pregnancy' theme, we hope that in the next month or so we will start to see signs of the goats coming into season, and then we can plan when to take them to Poole Batten Farm to mate with one of Jacqui's billies. We must confess to missing Pepper a bit recently although if he were still here, he would have to be away from the girls in case he impregnated Ryka, Terelle or Coriander, all of whom are too young. We are still not entirely sure what our goats plans are in the long term. We adore breeding them but we need to be sure about the outcome for any kids we raise.
Relaxed at Home
We have now made the definite decision NOT to raise any Boer kids for meat for ourselves. This is in part because having eaten some recently, we have decided we don’t enjoy it as much as our pork and lamb. We also have so much other meat that we don’t really need to add another type, particularly as we are still keen to take one of our Dexters to meat weight and so will be adding beef to the mix next year anyway. Pork and lamb continue to be our favourite meats, we do enjoy our poultry too and we are sure we will add beef to the list, but we also are keen NOT to eat too much of any of them on the basis that it is not necessarily a good thing to have meat every day!
Back to the goats, we may well resurrect our plans to sell two of the Boer females before the winter OR we might keep them all through and sell in the spring. At the moment we are keeping an eye on what else is selling out there. AND, in Jack’s case, trying to establish which goats (if any) she feels she could actually part with!!
