More carrots!
The goats haven’t been browsing as much as usual this last week or two. We have had to fix one of the places they had been using to gain access to the hedgerow (by some broken fencing) as it was getting very unsafe. Onion has also been limping due to a sprain and so probably is not in the best of health for clambering around in a hedge. Their hay consumption has definitely gone up (not surprisingly) but today we were also able to give them a few spare carrots from the greenhouse. They went down very well, tops and all! By law, we are allowed to feed them any produce from our greenhouse or garden as long as it has NOT travelled via our kitchen (see entry on 1st January for more on this).
Relaxed at Home
Back in Cornwall, the polytunnel provided endless treats for the goats (and sheep) but here at Cadbury Cottage the browsing is virtually endless, so they really don’t miss out. Come the autumn, there will be lots of goodies coming from the garden too as we trim trees and hedges. We tend to avoid giving them any ornamental cuttings though and as a rule, evergreen plants are a definite ‘no’. Goats have a reputation for eating anything but it is surprising how much they cannot and should not eat!! To be honest, if ours ate nothing but their goat mix, hay, willow and brambles they would be more than happy!!!
