Grazing and seasons (again)
The poultry area has been ‘birdless’ now for almost eight weeks and as such the grass is actually quite long. We thought the goats might like a bit of a graze in there and indeed they did! The ground is a tad wet after a night of rain (our first real rain for a couple of weeks) but the goats sensibly headed down to the bottom half of the paddock where the land is drier. The sun came out and they all got their heads down: a fabulous sight. The clouds in the background were somewhat ominous looking though and sure enough, we had another downpour which sent everyone back towards the barn for a while.
Relaxed at Home
In not such heart-warming news, Curds came into season today (!!??!!). It was a very half-hearted season that Pepper took only some interest in and that Curds herself seemed inclined to ignore. We are both disappointed AND relieved although now convinced that this bodes badly for Pickle who we think will also not be pregnant. Her next season is due Friday or before so we shall know soon enough.
Things continue to be fairly up and down with the goats: as a group there is a lot less ‘them and us’ but the dairies do have times still when they get quite nervy and unsettled. We think that the current mole activity we are getting is not helping: Curds was quite freaked by the sight of two huge mole hills the other day and we wonder whether mole activity under their house might be worrying them too (we had this with rabbits back in Minions). The Boers seem far more laid back but then they take their lead from the Dairies and so the other day, they would not walk past the mole hill either (till we encouraged them).
We also had to give Curds a shot of Metacam today (anti-inflammatory medicine) as she was not walking that well – another reason why her NOT being pregnant may be a good thing!!
